Homeschooling English Lessons
A Growing Trend
A recent article in The Times said that 1.5 million children in the UK are not going to school – a shocking but perhaps not surprising statistic. There are countless reasons why your child might be one of them and may not be able to access the education they would or should be receiving.
Whilst there is provision for some students who cannot attend school, the sheer numbers involved now mean that that provision is not there for all and some students will be left without any contact with qualified teachers.
Problems for parents
Every parent and guardian has the right to make the choice to homeschool their child, but parents might not have the time, resources or qualifications to be the best person to teach them. Even if parents are experts in some subjects from the National Curriculum, they are unlikely to be masters of all of them which might leave homeschooled children at a disadvantage, particularly in a core subject like English.
There are many apps, programmes and companies out there that offer support but this won’t suit all children or parents so a private tutor might be the answer for you. Students may be more likely to engage with a tutor face to face who can motivate and encourage them rather than an online learning programme where they have to motivate themselves.
Expert Delivery for Homeschooled Students
Whether your child needs permanent home schooling in English, or they are not at school for a fixed period of time, I am available. I can tutor Key Stage 3,4 and 5 (Years 7-13) students in and around Chelmsford. I can come to your home, or, for a reduced fee, your child can be tutored in my house. I am available during the school day, so your child doesn’t have to have a longer learning day than their peers who go to school.
Homeschooling Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3 (years 7-9), I can design a scheme of work for your child that mirrors what they would be doing in school but will be custom made for them: texts chosen to reflect your child’s interests, and tasks designed to meet their needs, stretching and scaffolding according to their ability.
To cover the National Curriculum requirements, I would need a minimum of 3 hours each week with a Key Stage 3 student.
Homeschooling Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4, (years10-11), both GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature can be delivered and, by working individually with your child, I can ensure they are mastering and revisiting the content as we go so that their knowledge develops and is embedded by the time they sit the examination. We can choose the texts from GCSE Literature exam specifications based on the preferences of your child so that they are not having to plough through a text they are unlikely to enjoy. I enjoy making texts accessible and engaging for students who might at first think they do not understand.
To cover the content of both GCSEs, I would need a minimum of 4-hour long sessions each week with a student.
Homeschooling Key Stage 5
One of the joys of studying English at A Level is the lively discussions classes have about the texts we study. These discussions enable students to learn how to express and defend their ideas and perspectives but also to consider the ideas of others to broaden their own understanding and appreciation. This is a difficult thing to replicate in a one-to-one session but not impossible.
A Level English Literature or A Level English Language and Literature can be taught in a homeschool situation to students who have a real passion and interest in the subjects. Having this passion will mean the discussion aspect, which I think is so integral, can still be achieved. For some students, they will actually find it easier to argue their views and opinions in the presence of just a tutor, rather than in front of peers where the fear of being wrong may hold them back.
Homeschooled students studying A Level English courses can work with me to decide which text choices from the specifications best suit them so that the A Level experience is tailored to their interests. Tuition would then focus on studying and discussing the texts and building up the skills, knowledge and confidence to take the examinations.
To cover an entire A Level English course, I would need a minimum of 4-hour long sessions each week with a student.
